Hello, young adults, let’s talk about a silent killer of purpose, a trap so subtle and common that many of us fall into it without even realizing it. We call it “flexibility,” but in reality, it’s indecision disguised as an open mind.
You know the feeling. You’re presented with a choice about your education, your career path, a new project, or even a relationship. Instead of making a decision, you tell yourself you’re “keeping your options open.” You’re being “flexible.” You’re waiting for the “right” path to reveal itself, just in case a better opportunity comes along.
The truth is, this isn’t flexibility—it’s paralysis. It’s the fear of commitment, and it’s the single most crippling thing that can stand in the way of living a life of purpose.
Drifting always accompanies indecision, feels easy, almost natural—like going with the flow and letting life decide for you. But the danger of drifting is that you wake up one day far from where you wanted to be, wondering how you got there. Purpose is never found in autopilot, nor not being 100% in; it requires intention. Don’t always allow circumstances to dictate your outcome. As a young adult, these are your defining years—the choices you make now set the direction of your life. If you don’t take the wheel, someone else will, and you may end up living a life designed by other people’s expectations instead of your own calling.
The Trap of “Flexibility”
Genuine flexibility is a strength; it’s the ability to adapt and change course after you’ve made a choice and started moving. Indecision disguised as flexibility is a weakness; it’s the inability to start moving at all. It keeps you on the starting line, perpetually waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect sign, while others are already running the race.
This trap often looks like:
- The “What If” Game: You endlessly weigh pros and cons, constantly asking, “What if I choose wrong? What if I miss out on a better opportunity?”
- The “Wait and See” Mindset: You put off starting a project or pursuing a passion because you’re “waiting for the perfect idea” or “more clarity.”
- Vague Commitments: You refuse to fully commit to a major, a job, or even a plan, leaving your options open just in case something better comes along, which prevents you from fully investing your time and energy.
This mindset is fueled by a fear of commitment and, ultimately, a lack of trust.
Why We Fall for It (and How It Conflicts with Faith)
As your Christian-based youth coach and mentor, I see this not just as a productivity problem, but as a spiritual one. Indecision is often a symptom of trying to be our own god, controlling every outcome and refusing to take a step of faith.
We fall into this trap because of:
- Fear of Failure: We believe there is one perfect, risk-free path, and we are terrified of choosing the wrong one. We forget that God can use our “imperfect” choices for His good.
- Fear of Commitment: A decision closes doors. We hold onto the illusion of limitless potential, forgetting that true potential is only unlocked through committed action.
- Lack of Trust in God’s Sovereignty: This is the core issue. We forget that God’s plan isn’t a blueprint we must follow flawlessly. It’s a journey. His guidance is given as we walk, not always before we take the first step. When we trust that He can redeem our mistakes and guide our path (Proverbs 3:5-6), we are free to make a choice.
Drifting often hides behind excuses: “I still have time,” “Everyone else is doing it,” or “I’ll figure it out later.” The truth is, drifting is not neutral—it’s moving, but without aim. And movement without aim never leads to purpose. Every distraction you give in to, every opportunity you ignore, every delay you justify—it’s all part of the current pushing you away from your potential. Living with purpose doesn’t mean you have every detail of your future figured out; it means choosing direction over confusion, discipline over delay, and progress over passivity. It means setting small, intentional goals that align with the bigger picture of who you want to become.
While the world may tell us to “go with the flow,” our faith teaches us to walk by trust, taking deliberate steps even when the path ahead isn’t clear. This intentional action demonstrates our trust in God’s guidance and sovereignty, affirming that we believe He has a plan for us, His promises are true, and that He will direct our paths as we move forward in faith, not while we remain standing still.
How to Break the Cycle and Find Your Anchor
If indecision has been a crippling force in your life, you can choose to break free. Here’s how you can move from paralysis to purposeful action:
- Embrace the “Good Enough” Choice: There is no single “perfect” choice. There is only a purposeful one. Choose the path that aligns with your values and feels like the next right step, and commit to making it a success. The quality of a decision is often determined by the commitment you bring to it, not the decision itself.
- Take the “Next Right Step”: You don’t need a five-year plan; you just need to know the very next step. If you want to start a business, the “next right step” might be to write down one idea or talk to one person. If you’re unsure about your purpose, the “next right step” might be to volunteer for a cause you care about. A single step of faith is more powerful than a lifetime of indecision.
- Cultivate Trust in God’s Guidance: This is the most important step. Remind yourself that God’s power is not limited by your imperfect decisions. His word says that He directs our paths after we have committed our work to Him (Proverbs 16:3). The path is revealed to those who are moving, not those who are standing still. Trust that He can use your faith and your efforts to lead you, even if you make a mistake along the way.
- Set a Deadline for Action: If you have a decision to make, set a realistic deadline to gather information, pray about it, and then commit. Give yourself a specific date to move from thinking to doing.
4-step guide to break from drifting—:
- Wake Up and Reflect: The first step to breaking free from drifting is awareness. Ask yourself, Where am I headed? Am I living intentionally or just letting life carry me? Honest reflection opens your eyes to the reality of your path.
- Set a Clear Direction: Purpose doesn’t require you to know every detail, but you must know your destination. Write down your values and your “why,” then create small, realistic goals that keep you aligned with it.
- Shape Your Environment: Drifting often comes from distractions and wrong influences. Surround yourself with people who sharpen you, cut off habits that waste your time, and design daily routines that push you forward.
- Anchor Yourself in Faith and Discipline: Prayer and/fasting, focus, and consistency will keep you steady when the currents of life try to pull you off track. Remember, it’s not intensity but daily discipline that steers you away from drifting and toward destiny.
Indecision disguised as “flexibility” is a trap that keeps you from ever fulfilling your purpose. It promises safety but delivers a life of stagnation. You were created for more than that. You were created to walk in purpose.
Refuse to be swept away by the currents of comfort, fear, or distraction. Instead, anchor yourself in your core motivation and steer your life with conviction, because only those who dare to steer create the future they dream of.
So, choose today to stop standing still. Take one step of faith. The road will be revealed as you walk.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I ask You to give me clarity and courage. Help me to see my purpose and to make intentional decisions that honor You. Guide my steps, Lord, and keep me from drifting aimlessly. I trust that You will lead me forward as I walk with You.
In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen.
