If your body is a temple, rest is the maintenance crew. You don’t have to earn your rest; God commands it because He knows we need it.  The Lie of the Hustle

Beyond Mountain-Moving Faith: Embracing the Season of Surrender

Society often convinces us that our worth is determined by our accomplishments and productivity, celebrating busy schedules, endless to-do lists, and the pressure to constantly “keep up.” However, this belief is misleading. The pursuit of hustle as a measure of value keeps our bodies in a state of high stress, floods our brains with cortisol, and leaves our spirits exhausted and disconnected from our true selves.

The fear of falling behind pushes us into a cycle of constant busyness, where we obsessively check tasks off our lists to prove our worth. This relentless striving significantly contributes to elevated cortisol levels, which can have detrimental effects on both our bodies and minds. Physically, high cortisol can weaken the immune system, disrupt sleep, strain the heart, promote weight gain (especially around the abdomen), cause digestive issues, and accelerate skin and hair aging. Mentally and emotionally, it leads to anxiety, irritability, depression, cognitive fog, and burnout, trapping our nervous systems in a constant fight-or-flight mode. Over time, this makes it increasingly difficult to think clearly, make decisions, and maintain our overall well-being.

But here is the truth of the Sabbath principle: rest is not laziness—it is an active act of trust in God. When you intentionally pause work, silence worry, and step away from distractions like your phone, you are declaring, “God, I trust that your provision and purpose for me will still be here tomorrow, even if I stop striving today.” Rest is the antidote to hustle. It shifts faith from anxious striving to calm, confident receiving, allowing your body, mind, and spirit to realign with God’s peace.

The True Meaning of “Casting Your Cares”

When the Bible tells us to cast our cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7), it’s not just a nice thought—it’s a neurological instruction. We are being told to intentionally put down the burdens that spike our stress hormones.

Choosing rest is physically and spiritually making room for God’s peace. It’s an act of worship that says, “I surrender my need to control this outcome.”

Part 3: The 3-Step “Bedtime Triage” Protocol

Ready to put this into practice? Here is a simple, three-step routine designed to tell your nervous system and your spirit that the crisis is over and it’s safe to rest.

  • The 30-Minute Digital Detox (Physical Intervention)

The Rule: Shut down all screens—phone, laptop, TV—30 minutes before your head hits the pillow.

The Why: Blue light suppresses melatonin (your sleep hormone). More importantly, the constant dopamine hits from notifications keep your cortisol spiking. Your phone is literally a stress trigger. Give your brain a clear signal that the workday and the social demands are over.

  • The Prayer of Release (Spiritual Intervention)

The Practice: Do this immediately after stepping away from your screens. Use the simple, short prayer below to “download” the day’s worries, rather than taking them to bed.  3. The Ritual of Stillness (Mind/Body Connection)

The Practice: Slow, deep, diaphragmatic breathing for 90 seconds.

The Why: Deep breathing is the fastest, non-chemical way to signal to your Vagus Nerve (the main controller of your “rest and digest” system) that the danger is officially over. You are intentionally lowering your heart rate and allowing your cortisol level to finally drop, making your physical body ready to receive the peace you prayed for.

Conclusion: Partnering with Your Body to Hear God’s Voice

If you find yourself stuck in the cycle of spiritual guilt and physical exhaustion, remember this: Your physical rest is a necessary prerequisite for spiritual clarity.

You are not weak for being tired; you are human. Honouring your need for sleep is not a distraction from purpose—it’s the fuel for it. Give yourself permission to let the day end and let God be God. When your cortisol levels drop, your ability to hear His voice will rise.  What is the one thing you are going to leave at the foot of your bed tonight?

A Short Prayer for Cortisol Control

Father, thank you for your perfect design, knowing that my body and spirit require rest. I ask that you would command my anxious mind to be still and my body’s stress hormones to calm down. I release the lie of the hustle and the need to control tomorrow, trusting that your love is my sufficient worth. Guard my heart and mind as I sleep, clearing the noise so I may hear your voice with fresh clarity in the morning. May your peace, which surpasses all understanding, dwell within me now and always.  In Jesus Christ’s authority, Amen.
