In other words, I mean prayer. To have a conversation with someone, recognizing their presence is necessary; for God, this involves believing in His existence and opening your spirit to Him. However, knowing Him is equally important to engage in an intimate conversation, like the one you would have with a loving parent or dear friend.
Who is God?
You might question why I bring Him up when you already know Him. But reflect on which God you know or call your God. In the Old Testament, at some point, people started worshipping many different gods until God appeared to Abraham. From that point, most people honoured the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, Jacob, Elijah, and Israel. But now came Savior Jesus Christ, who brought God into our spirits by the Holy Spirit through His sacrifice, and now He is the God of everyone.
The Universality of God
Now, it’s no longer appropriate to say “the god of Ernest” “the god of Ihuoma” “the god of Stanley” “the god of Mwangi,” “the god of Catholic,” “the god of Pentecost,” etc., because God is no longer known by only a few people but by all. As a Christian, your God is not different from my God or that of another Christian so long as it’s through His son Jesus Christ.
However, the Christian God is not the same as the gods worshipped by others, such as traditional gods, pagan gods, the moon god, the sun god, other spirit gods, the universe god, idol gods, animal or moulded gods, object gods, human gods, art or signs gods, etc. (Romans 1:20 – “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse,” and Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth and everything in it”).
The Eternal Nature of God
This shows us that God is eternal. He was there before everything, is here now, and will always be. God is uncreated and unmoved. He was before time, before any atom, before matter, before substance, before anything could be. He is eternal/everlasting/forever/endless/infinite/holy/pure/love. Nothing happens that shocks God or catches Him by surprise.
The Unchanging God
God has nothing to become; God does not change with situations, God does not improve, He IS. There is no love beyond His love; He doesn’t change His mind (it is only that we human beings describe God in ways we can understand Him, so we use anthropomorphic language to explain complex ideas). The divine God, the Lord of our Savior Jesus Christ, the God of the Bible, is not like any other gods. Don’t copy-paste from others, don’t treat Him as you see other people treat their gods (Deuteronomy 12:4 – “Do not worship the LORD your God in the way these pagan peoples worship their gods”).
He is different in that He is transcendent, imminent (Psalm 139:7-12). So you can call Him wherever you are; He is present in moments of pain, in moments of suffering. He is present when we are happy/joyful, present when we are sad, present when we are lonely. He is present when we are loved, He is present when we are in darkness, present when in the light, He is present when we are on the mountain, He is present when we are in the valley. Nothing takes away His presence from us in Christ Jesus. Your body will change, time and seasons will change, and your friends will change, but God never changes.
The Nature of Prayer and Worship
No amount of prayer, worship, fasting, or giving can change God, as nothing in creation defines Him. He exists beyond creation, including humanity, and remains God, unaltered by human actions. Unlike localized deities in traditions and contemporary gods that demand offerings or sacrifices for appeasement and action, this view promotes a prayer approach that focuses on God’s nature rather than attempting to influence Him through rituals or gifts.
The Purpose of Prayer
If prayers or worship don’t change God, why do we need to pray then? Prayers, worship, and fasting transform you, aligning you with His grace, will, and purpose. While you adjust to His agenda, God and His love remain constant. That doesn’t mean all your prayers will be answered, nor does it mean that God hates you and loves others; it only means He is doing His will. His WILL is something we will never fully comprehend as human beings as we cannot fathom His doing fully, but He reveals it to us through His son Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit step by step.
Trusting in God’s Will
But whether they are answered or not, He is God; His grace will be sufficient in whatever circumstances you are in, so long as you believe and trust Him. But it is good to remember that God’s purpose for us is not only for meeting our physical needs—flesh and blood—but more so for meeting the needs of our spirit now on earth and in the afterlife. When you attach God’s presence to things, money, comfort, health, prosperity, and physical blessings, then when they leave, you think God has left, or He is not there, or He doesn’t love you anymore. But He’s ever-present. Therefore, it is better to attach yourself to God through His son JESUS CHRIST; nothing will separate you from Him (Romans 8:31-39).
The Impact of Prayer
As your pursuit of God deepens, so too does your prayer life and life’s productivity flourish. Be joyful always, pray at all times, and be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from us in our life in union with Christ Jesus (2 Thessalonians 5:16). Now, say a prayer to that God you know better, and every day your conversation with God will improve and your discernment.
